Full Job Description

Position Summary/Scope of Responsibility

The Centers for Advanced Orthopaedics LLC (CAO) is one of the nation’s largest Orthopaedics practices, owned and operated by physicians, with over 60 locations across Maryland, Northern Virginia, and the District of Columbia. This Physician’s Assistant (PA) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) will support Dr. Mackie-Jenkins, the Pain Management Physician, as he expands his clinical operations and growth. The PA or NP will provide direct patient care according to state guidelines under the direction of the supervising physician. The PA or NP will build their own panel of patients within three to six months (many of these patients will migrate from Dr. Mackie-Jenkins to the PA or NP). The PA or NP will be involved in the coordination of treatment and assist in the management of chronic pain care. In coordination with the supervising physician, the PA or NP will develop a comprehensive plan of care and collaborate with the care team to ensure continuity and quality care.

Primary Responsibilities

The incumbent may be asked to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically stated in this description. The duties and responsibilities of the position are to be carried out in a manner that is consistent with the Mission, Core Values and Operating Principles of CAO. The PA or NP will be expected to carry out patient care and associated tasks in accordance with Dr. Mackie-Jenkins’ protocols and expectations.

Pain Management job-specific duties:

  • Provide care for the majority of pain management routine follow-up patients.
  • Perform certain injections in clinic, including but not limited to trigger point injections and certain joint injections.
  • Care for and manage the majority of patients requiring medication management. Mackie-Jenkins rarely prescribes full-agonist opioids, but does prescribe buprenorphine (Butrans, Belbuca, occasionally suboxone) for chronic pain.
  • Provide appropriate patient recommendations and schedule procedures (and follow-up procedures at appropriate intervals) for patients based on their symptoms.
  • Consult with and receive approval from Dr. Mackie-Jenkins regarding ALL opioid recommendations.
  • Provide and manage care for patients with an intrathecal pump.

General duties:

  • Examines patient, performs comprehensive physical examination, and compiles patient medical data, including health history and results of physical examination.
  • Administers or orders diagnostic tests, such as x-ray, electrocardiogram, and laboratory tests, and interprets test results for deviations from normal.
  • Consults with physician when warranted to assess patient condition and treatment.
  • Performs therapeutic procedures, such as injections, immunizations, suturing and wound care, and managing infection.
  • Develops and implements patient management plans, records progress notes, and assists in provision of continuity of care.
  • Instructs and counsels patients regarding compliance with prescribed therapeutic regimens, normal growth and development, family planning, emotional problems of daily living, and health maintenance.
  • Assist in operating room with designated duties per the credentials with the specific facility either surgery center or hospital based on training and education.
  • Performs preoperative activities according to Facility policy.
  • Confers with the Physician about the planned anesthetic to be administered.
  • Documents orders and considerations specified by and carried out by Physician.
  • Provides support to medical and office staff.
  • Ensures consistent compliance with all regulatory and CAO guidelines, policies, and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education & Experience

  • Completed Master’s degree in Physician Studies or Nurse Practitioner Program from an accredited Institution.
  • Current and active licensing/certification as a Physician Assistant (PA-C) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) from a recognized certifying body.
  • BLS Certification required.
  • 1-2 years’ experience preferred.
  • Must maintain CEU’s in pertinent clinical practice according to licensure requirements.
  • Experience working in patient care, primarily in Pain Management or Orthopedic settings.
  • Experience and proficiency working with computers and electronic medical records.

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to sit for long periods of time and lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to use appropriate body mechanics when making necessary transfers and helping patients with exercises.
  • Requires frequent bending, reaching, repetitive hand movements, standing, walking, squatting, and sitting.
  • Some heavy lifting, pushing, and pulling exerted regularly throughout a standard work shift.
  • Adequate hearing to perform duties in person and over telephone.
  • Requires hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity needed to operate a keyboard, medical equipment, fax machine, scanner, photocopier, and telephone.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly to patients in person and over the telephone.
  • Visual acuity adequate to perform job duties, including reading materials from printed sources and computer screens.
  • Requires exposure to communicable diseases, bodily fluids, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common to a clinical environment.
